Focusing solely on the spelling of new vocabulary is the least effective strategy for promoting vocabulary use in students because it limits the broader understanding and application of words. Vocabulary acquisition is enhanced through various processes, including exposure to words in context, usage in speaking and writing, and engagement with the meanings of words. By concentrating only on spelling, students may memorize the correct form of each word without developing a deeper understanding of its meaning, pronunciation, or contextual usage.

In contrast, using games to reinforce new words actively engages students, making learning enjoyable and interactive, which can lead to better retention. Encouraging reading beyond grade level exposes students to more complex vocabulary and varied contexts, fostering comprehension and practical application of words. Incorporating vocabulary journals allows students to take ownership of their learning by selecting words that resonate personally, applying them in their own contexts, and reflecting on their usage, thus promoting deeper engagement with the vocabulary.
